Spoonflower's Annual Tea Towel Calendar Contest

My entry to Spoonflower's tea towel calendar contest, Feathers and Flowers design by Hazel Fisher Creations
It's time for Spoonflower's annual tea towel calendar contest again! It's hard to believe how quickly this time of year comes around and this is the 4th year I have taken part in the contest!  I sketched a few ideas out for the calendar and chose to work up this feathers and flowers design for my entry.  My feathers and arrows fabric design has been popular on Spoonflower, so I thought I would like to add some new feathers designs - starting with this calendar!

My Entry to Spoonflower's Annual Tea Towel Calendar Contest - 2017 Tropical Toucan

It's that time of year again - time for Spoonflower's annual tea towel calendar contest!  This year I decided to go for a tropical theme and created a design featuring a colourful toucan surrounded by leaves (I love to draw birds!).  Here's what the finished design looks like...

Spoonflower Contest - Japanese Garden

Spoonflower Contest Entry Japanese Garden, surface pattern design by hazelfishercreations
This month Spoonflower have partnered with Sprout Patterns for their design contest.  The theme is Japanese Garden and the winning design will be featured in the release of a new kimono sewing pattern!
I enjoyed having longer to work on this contest, which gave me the opportunity to spend time researching ideas, sketching and finally pulling my ideas together into a finished pattern.  I collected some of my inspiration on this board on Pinterest - like beautiful flowers and kimonos.
I sketched ideas which included different flowers, birds and butterflies, but in the end decided to keep the design a little simpler, by creating a repeat made from intertwined cherry blossom and anemones, with a butterfly.

Spoonflower Contest Japanese Garden sketchbook - hazelfishercreations
I'm happy with how this design turned out - as well as making it available to buy on fabric, giftwrap and wallpaper on Spoonflower, I plan to use it on products in my Society6 shop.  For the contest, I chose a turquoise shade for the background colour but I also plan to have some test swatches printed in other colours - I tried grey for the background and think this looked nice too.

Voting is now open (until 27th April) on Spoonflower http://www.spoonflower.com/sprout-design-challenge. I noticed that there are 705 entries - so lots of people were inspired by this theme!  I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else came up with.

Spoonflower Contest - Love Is In The Air

Spoonflower Contest entry 'Love is in the Air' fabric design by hazelfishercreations
This week's Spoonflower contest theme is 'Love is in the Air' and the brief was to create a love-inspired, weather-centric design.  I had an idea to create something with silhouettes of swallows, with clouds and hearts.  I have to say though, I found this one a bit frustrating to work on.  I kept changing bits around but it still didn't turn out quite how I imagined.  But then sometimes designs I really like don't end up being as popular as designs I like less!  I will have to see how it looks printed on fabric.

You can see all of the other entries, and vote for your favourite 'Love is in the Air' designs on Spoonflower: http://www.spoonflower.com/contests/341

Spoonflower don't have any new contest themes up at the moment, there will be an announcement about what they have been working on instead in their newsletter this Thursday - very intriguing!

PS. Thank you if you voted for my design in the Limited Colour Palette contest, it came 61st of out of 516 entries, with 154 votes.  The winning entry was a lovely design incorporating sleeping foxes, flowers and birds by Ewa Brzozowska - you can see it on Spoonflower, along with the rest of the results.

Spoonflower Contest - Limited Colour Palette Grey, Cream, Cucumber and Peach

Spoonflower contest Limited Colour Palette Grey, Cream, Cucumber and Peach, surface pattern design by hazelfishercreations
It's National Wedding Month, so the colours for this week's Spoonflower Limited Colour Palette contest were inspired by popular wedding colours; grey, cream, cucumber and peach (white and black were also allowed).  Designs for the contest didn't have to be wedding themed, but I decided to create something based on hearts.  I sketched ideas with patterned hearts and floral and leaf motifs before coming up with the design above.  Although I started with pen line drawings for all of the shapes, I didn't want to have outlines for everything in the finished design so played around with changing the colours of the lines / filled in colour.  I like the way the lighter colours of the flowers and leaves contrast against the darker grey background.

As always, you can see all of the other entries and vote for your favourites over on Spoonflower - this appears to have been a popular contest with over 500 entries! http://www.spoonflower.com/contests/340

Spoonflower Contest - Interspecies Animal Friendships

Spoonflower Contest entry Interspecies Animal Friends Cats and Birds - Friends Forever hazelfishercreations
This week's Spoonflower contest is 'Interspecies Animal Friendships'; a theme which could have so many combinations of animals!  I decided to create a design focused on cats and birds, just because I like cats and birds really. :)  You can see below some of my work in progress, where I started with pencil drawings in my sketchbook, which became pen line drawings.  These were then turned into vector art and I finished the design digitally.  I wanted to experiment with flatter colour this time as well as changing the colours of my line drawings.

PS. Thank you if you voted for my Year of the Monkey design a couple of weeks ago - it came 43rd out of 252 entries with 141 votes.  I received a test swatch of it last week on Spoonflower's new Cotton Spandex Jersey, which means you can now buy my Year of the Monkey design on fabric, gift wrap and wallpaper.  I was impressed with the new Cotton Spandex Jersey fabric too.  It's a lovely soft and stretchy fabric, I think it would be great for making t-shirts and comfy clothing!

Spoonflower Contest - Tea Towel Calendar 2016

It's that time of year again for Spoonflower's annual Tea Towel Calendar contest!  As there is no set theme, there is always a wonderful range of subjects for the entries.  Last year I entered my Budgie design and I thought that I would continue with a pets theme for this year, so created this design with cats and kittens...

The cats design also goes with my existing Kittens with Mittens design in my Spoonflower shop.

In other Spoonflower news...
My Microorganisms design from a few weeks ago came 59th out of 326 entries (with 179 votes) - thank you if you voted for my design!  There were some interesting and colourful designs in the top ten - you can see them on Spoonflower's blog post.
This week I also received the swatch sampler I ordered with some new designs on.  I haven't had chance to photograph the swatches yet, but I'll be sharing them soon and making them available to buy from my Spoonflower shop.

Spoonflower Contest - Microorganisms

Microorganisms Spoonflower design hazelfishercreations Spoonflower are always coming up with unusual themes for their weekly contests - like this week's Microorganisms theme.  Researching and drawing viruses, bacteria and amoeba took me right back to Biology lessons at school!
The contest called for a small scale design (previewed as an 8x8 inch swatch) and I decided to create the pattern using simple line drawings with silhouette shapes of the mircoorganisms. I quite like the result and could imagine it being used to make purses, bags and accessories for biologists and science lovers.  I kind of like the idea of using the fabric to make a dress too, although I'm not sure I would be bold enough to actually wear something covered in viruses and bacteria!  Would you wear it - or make something different with it?
I sent off for a swatch of this design when Spoonflower had a free shipping day last week, so it will be interesting to see what it looks like printed.

Spoonflower Contest - Cephalopods

Cephalopod Octopus Spoonflower design hazelfishercreationsThe theme for this week's Spoonflower contest is Cephalopods.  I wanted to keep my design fairly simple and chose to focus on one animal; the octopus.  I thought that their long flowing arms really lent themselves to creating a decorative design filled with swirling patterns.  I drew just one version of the octopus and flipped it to create the pattern, then added in hand drawn swirls to fill in the gaps.  I got carried away playing with colours for this design, before choosing the version above to enter into the contest.  I love trying out different colour combinations with designs, there are so many options though it can be hard to know when to stop!  I was really happy with how the design turned out, so I plan to add it to my shop what ever happens with the results for the contest.  I think I will send for samples in a couple of different colourways, I just need to make a decision on which ones!  Here are 4 more versions - which ones are your favourites and you think I should add to my Spoonflower shop?

Spoonflower Contest - 90s Nostalgia

This week's Spoonflower challenge theme is 90s' Nostalgia, which resulted in me having a good rummage around my cupboards to dig out some of my old toys and collections! I couldn't resist sharing a photo of some of the things I rediscovered...

90s nostalgia children collection photo hazelfishercreationsI felt just like a child again! Remembering the things I used to play with, like my Polly Pockets, trolls, plastic dinosaurs and animals.  I even found a website that lists all the Polly Pockets they made by year - I found the Polly Princess ring I had, but lost the Polly doll, and the Midge doll from a pencil, but I lost the pencil and dome - I wonder what happened to them!?
I also looked through some of my collections of erasers, pencils and badges which brought back memories of where they came from - like the little frog erasers from one of the first school trips I went on at a nature reserve.  I considered getting out all my old Lego too - but thought I would save that for another time since I had already made quite a mess getting everything else out!

Apart from a taking a trip down memory lane, I was searching for inspiration for designing an entry for the Spoonflower contest.  Lots of the things I came across were trademarked toys, which I didn't want to include in my design, so I chose to incorporate other things - like rollerskates, cassette tapes, floppy disks, pencils, smiley face and 'flump' shaped erasers.  The rollerskates were inspired by a pair of purple and yellow ones I used to have (but was mostly too afraid to use!).  This is the finished design I came up with...

August Review

Another month has flown by and it’s September already!  That means it’s time for a look back at some of the things I did in August…

New designs, Spoonflower…
I don’t like to waste things so when I realised that I was running out of space in my current sketchbooks I decided to make myself a new one from spare pages left at the back of some old uni sketchbooks.  I used to like making books but hadn’t done any in a long time, it got me thinking about putting together some different book making tutorials – I’ve added that to my ‘to do’ list!

I used my newly made sketchbook for drawing ideas for Spoonflower’s annual Fabric8 contest.  This year the theme is Botanical Sketchbook, so I took inspiration from my garden and drew some of the plants, flowers and vegetables which I grow…

August review Botanical sketchbook wip 1c hazelfishercreationsAugust review Botanical sketchbook wip 2b hazelfishercreations
Here’s my final fabric design… Unfortunately it was not picked to be one of the 100 semi-finalists (there were close to 800 entries!), but I will still be making it available to buy from my Spoonflower shop in the near future.  (I took advantage of Spoonflower’s Free Swatch Day and ordered a sample.)  I am also planning to create some coordinating designs to form a small collection around this one.  The 8 finalists in the Fabric8 contest have now been chosen.  They are all lovely designs, you can see them here.

August review Botanical sketchbook final fabric design hazelfishercreationsIn August I also entered Spoonflower’s ‘Butterfly Coordinates’ contest – thank you if you voted for my design!  My entry came 78th (with 109 votes) out of 274 designs – you can see all of the other entries here.

Baking…
I baked a banana, blueberry and walnut cake which I shared the recipe for last week.  You can see more recipes I have shared on my blog in the past here.

Knitting
When I was recovering from being unwell in July I started knitting a cardigan.  After a bit of a false start (when I got in a muddle having dropped some stitches only a few rows in and had to start again) it’s going well now.  I’m knitting with Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK which is a gorgeous soft yarn.  I would usually avoid wool because I’ve found it irritates my skin, but this yarn is so soft – hopefully it will feel good to wear too!

August review knitting cardigan hazelfishercreations
I’m using this Drops pattern, which I’ve pinned to my Knit and Crochet board on Pinterest along with other knitting and crochet patterns and tutorials…

Other things…
A few months ago I wrote about trialling Adobe Illustrator and wanting to try Serif’s DrawPlus X8, well I now have the full DrawPlus program and have been really happy with it so far.  Learning how to do new things is so exciting and satisfying too – there were a few things I wanted to be able to do with DrawPlus but I wasn’t sure if I could.  It doesn’t work in exactly the same way as Illustrator but I have worked out how to convert my scanned line drawings to vectors and draw scalloped circles!

Well, I think that’s about it for August!  August was a bit of a disrupted month work wise, but I'm starting to get back into a more normal routine again now it's September, so hopefully you'll soon be seeing more new designs and craft projects / tutorials I have planned to do on my blog.

Spoonflower Contest - Butterfly Coordinates

2015Aug19 Spoonflower Contest Butterfly Coordinates fabric surface pattern design hazelfishercreationsIt’s hard to believe that the last Spoonflower contest I entered (Mermaids) was way back in May!  I’m pleased that I have a little more time available at the moment so I can enter some of the contests again.  This week’s theme was ‘Butterfly Coordinates’ and involved designing 4 coordinating prints on 1 yard of fabric.  I decided to use my existing butterflies design (top left) and create 3 more designs to coordinate with this.

July Review

July started off well for me but ended with an unplanned (and very much unwanted) break when I came down with the flu.  After a couple of weeks of doing nothing at all, things are slowly starting to return to normal this week.  It’s taking me a while to get my brain back into gear so this month’s review will be particularly helpful in reminding myself of all the things I was working on before I got sick and I hope you find it interesting too!

New designs…
I worked on several new designs in July which unfortunately I can’t share with you yet, although I did design a new set of Lavender flower themed scrapbooking papers (which you can see in my shop here).  If you follow me on facebook you will have already seen a picture from my sketchbook when I started designing these papers.

I also created some new surface pattern designs for Spoonflower, to coordinate with my existing fabric designs.  I  received the sample swatches last week and am in the process of making the new designs available to buy from my Spoonflower shop as fabric, gift wrap and wallpaper.

I added a new colour way of the ditsy sheep design with a lemon yellow background and 2 coordinating flower and spotty patterns…

Blog…
In July I shared some ideas for teacher gifts, I was able to reveal the secret project I had been working on for 3 Picnic DIY Ideas and I posted a colour palette inspired by a photograph of a beetle I found in my garden.  Hopefully August will run a little smoother than July and I will be able to share more of the craft projects and tutorials I have been planning to do.

Other Work...
July was a time for catching up on admin and taxes, not very exciting but it had to be done!  I also decided to make a few changes to the design of my pages online - I changed the background to my blog from a basic chevron pattern to a hand drawn floral pattern (hope you like it!) - I thought it reflected my work a bit more, being hand drawn, and was more interesting than the old pattern.  I also tweaked things like my cover photo and profile image on facebook and the banner in my Etsy shop.  I'll probably continue making a few more changes to things in August.

Other things…
At the start of July we had 2 gorgeous new additions to our house – these cute guinea pigs! :)  The one on the left is called Lily and the one on the right is Rosie.  We soon noticed they have different characters – Rosie is the shy one while Lily is bolder and more curious.  Lily is also a lot more lively and wriggly, whereas Rosie is quite happy to sit still while you hold her.  They haven’t squeaked much yet, although they do get very excited especially when they get new hay – it’s funny watching them popcorn and dashing about!

May Review

Another month has passed – it’s 2nd June today which means summer (meteorologically speaking) has officially begun in the UK!  It doesn't feel particularly summery here though - very windy, overcast and not that warm - I'm hoping it will be improving later in the week!  The start of the new month means that it is time for a little look back at some of the things I did in May…

New designs / illustrations…
I’ve been feeling quite inspired lately with ideas for new designs – I just need the time to be able to work on them all!  I did manage to add several new designs to my shop in May, filling out some of my existing collections – like the Elephant baby shower designs…
Elephant Baby Shower printable party set mint bunting wishes card thank you cupcake toppers instant hfcSupplies 1This is the ‘mint’ collection, it is also available in blue and pink.  The set is available as instant download and includes ‘hello baby’ bunting, cupcake toppers, thank you cards, wishes for baby card and baby predictions card.

I also added some new Sunflower themed designs – an invitation and set of cupcake toppers which can be customised with your choice of messages.

Spoonflower fabric...
I entered one Spoonflower contest in May, with a Mermaids theme.  Initially when the results were announced Spoonflower only showed the designs in the top ten, but I noticed today that they changed their mind after several complaints and have now posted a list with all the entries.  I suppose that it doesn’t really matter where my entries come in their contests, but it is interesting to see how well they do.  My mermaids design came 158th out of 365 entries.  By the way, I realised that I hadn’t mentioned about the results for the previous Spoonflower contest I entered (Flowers for Mom border print).  My design came 52nd (out of 315 entries) with 159 votes.   Thank you if you voted for my designs! :)

Having created new designs, particularly for contests, over the last few months I had built up enough of a collection to send for a new swatch sampler from Spoonflower.  The samples arrived last week!  I’m always a little uncertain as to how my designs will look printed on the fabric – how the colours will look etc.  I was really pleased with how this batch of designs turned out on the Kona cotton!

2015 May 27 Spoonflower swatches new fabric designs hazelfishercreations 1The Steampunk Valentine design was already available to buy from my shop, but all of the other designs are new in my Spoonflower shop – like this sheep design…

When I test out new designs from Spoonflower I usually order a swatch sampler of 15 designs, so they arrive on one large piece of fabric.  I feel like I can’t spoil the fabric by cutting it up, but the large sheets are a bit unwieldy, so I decided it was about time I made a start on doing something different with them.  I’m working my way through my swatches, cutting them out with pinking shears, I will then organise them into collection by theme and make them into little books – much easier for flicking through myself and for showing other people.  I’ll post some pictures when I’ve finished sorting them out!

Blog DIY Tutorials
Last month I introduced my Silhouette Cameo cutting machine and posted a couple of diy tutorials; making a Dragon from my cut & sew fabric and a birthday card inspired by citrus colours.  I am currently working on some very exciting new DIY projects and I will be sharing the tutorials later this month!

Garden
May is a very pretty month for our garden – although it is a bit overgrown the flower border has been filled with pink and purple aquilegia, corn flowers and forget-me-nots which give it a very cottage garden feel!  The laburnum is lovely too – full of bright yellow flowers which the bees seem to love as well.

2015 June 01 may monthly review garden photo hazelfishercreations
My seedlings are growing well – there will be lots of work over the next few weeks to get everything planted out and all the smaller seedlings potted up too.  I’ve been experimenting with some tips I came across for growing different plants, controlling weeds and pests like aphids.  I think I may do a few garden posts in the future sharing the tips I’ve found that work – hopefully they might be interesting / useful to people.

Other things…
I’m still trialling Adobe’s Illustrator program, as I talked about in this post last week – 10 days left of the free trial for me to play!  I still want to try Serif’s Drawplus too.

I had the urge to do more drawing last week – actually it was after seeing some amazing Caneletto paintings on The One Show last week.  So I got my sketchbook out in the evening and did some drawing from pictures I found on Pinterest.  They’re just for fun but it did make me think about working on some new illustrations and maybe going back to work on some new Hexley things again…

Spoonflower Contest – Mermaids & learning Illustrator

2015 May 26 Spoonflower mermaids contest illustration hazelfishercreationsThis week’s Spoonflower contest has the added excitement that the winner will have the chance of their design being made into pajamas by CWDkids!  The challenge has a Mermaids theme and one of the requirements was that the design should contain a maximum of 8 colours.  At first I found it quite difficult restricting myself to just 8 colours, but it was a good challenge and made me think carefully about how I used the same colours across different elements of the design.

You can see my Mermaids design on Spoonflower here.  As usual you can see all the other entries and vote for your favourites on Spoonflower:  http://www.spoonflower.com/contest_voters_temp/new?contest_id=304

Another aspect of this challenge was that the winning design would need to be sent as a vector file, so it was suggested the original file should be prepared for this.  I have vary rarely worked with vectors so this design was a good opportunity for me to try something new and learn more about vectors!  I found that you can get a free 30 day trial of Abobe’s Illustrator and I love that I have been able to try out the full program (unlike some trials for other programs which limit the tools you can use).

2015 May 26 Spoonflower mermaids contest illustration hazelfishercreations 3
I have only learnt a little so far – enough to allow me to create my Mermaid design.  I like the Image Trace tool, which I used to convert my scanned pen drawing to vector line art, as it allows me to change the scale of my drawing and to easily change the colour of the lines.  I don’t usually use flat colour to fill in my designs, but for this challenge it worked well.  I also like Illustrator’s tool for creating patterns as I could instantly see how the repeat worked.

I’m still part way through the free trial so have time to play around a bit more.  I’m undecided yet as to whether I would take up the monthly paid subscription.  I had never really used Illustrator before; partly because the high price has put me off using it in the past.  Although it is still quite an expensive program, now Adobe have all their programs in the Creative Cloud if a project comes along that I really need it for it’s good to know I could just subscribe for the month I need it.

I would also like to test out Serif’s Drawplus X8 to see how that compares to Illustrator (I already use Photoplus and Pageplus from Serif).  Do you use Drawplus or Illustrator?  What do you think of them?

Spoonflower Contest – Flowers for Mom Border Print

2015 May 01 Flowers for Mom border print Spoonflower fabric design contest hazelfishercreations1I was excited to see the results from last week’s Bees themed Spoonflower contest – my design came 27th out of 502 entries (with 263 votes)!  Thank you to anyone who voted for it!  You can see the winning design, and the rest of the top ten, on Spoonflower’s blog.  I’m getting a collection of new designs together so hopefully it won’t be long before I have enough to be able to order another swatch sampler and then make the new designs available to buy.

This week’s contest theme is ‘Flowers for Mom Border Print’, which involved creating a floral design to run along the selvage edge of the fabric.  The designs will be previewed at one yard size (42 x 36 inches), so I created a design much larger than I usually work on.  I drew the flowers in pen across 2 sheets of A4 paper and coloured them digitally.  The tallest flowers in the final design are about 22 inches tall.  Below is how my entry looks, showing the full width of 42 inch wide fabric…
