I'm missing the children and their enthusiasm for learning! However, I do have another Art Club video to share with you. In my last lesson at school we looked at the colour wheel and the children learnt about mixing secondary colours from primary colours and this was the inspiration my video. I am aware that not everyone is fortunate to have art materials at home, but that doesn't mean you can't still be creative. In this video I show you the colour wheel, primary and secondary colours and how to make your own colour wheel by going on a colour wheel treasure hunt!

Welcome to Art Club!
With current lockdown restrictions in place the art club I have been running at a local primary school is currently on hold, so in the meantime I have decided to start up an online art club. This has the added benefit that even more people can join in! Art Club is for anyone who wants to learn about drawing and improve their art skills, whatever your age or skill level.

In our first video I will be showing you how to draw a barn owl, using simple shapes as guides to help you with your drawing before adding in details. All you need for this is a pencil and paper and if you want to draw along with me feel free to pause the video at any time.

I hope you enjoy this video - don't forget to check out my other Art Club videos!
You may have already seen that I have been creating printable colouring pages which you can download for free. I wanted to do something to help people in these challenging times and thought that colouring sheets would be a fun activity to occupy children (and adults!) while staying safe at home. Creativity is also a great way to deal with stress and give your mind a break from all the worrying thoughts that may be running around your head, particularly at the moment.

I want to do more though. While many of us are doing our bit by staying at home, following guidance from the government, there are many people working in key roles or volunteering. They work in schools, care homes, grocery shops, deliver our post and continue to provide emergency services to name but a few. The people truly on the front line are the NHS workers; doctors, nurses and all the support staff who are essential to keep our hospitals running. I recently watched a news report from an intensive care unit in a hospital where they were caring for coronavirus patients. It was distressing to watch, but I felt it was important to understand what was going on. The NHS are doing an amazing job, in such difficult cirumstances. In return, we can support them. The NHS Charities Together COVID-19 Urgent Appeal has been set up to support NHS staff, volunteers and patients impacted by COVID-19. Donations to the charity could help in many ways, such as funding well-being packs, supporting isolated patients and provide longer term mental health support for staff, volunteers, patients and their families.

The fundraising page which I set up has now closed, however you can still support NHS Charities Together by donating directly to them here.

The colouring pages I design and make available for you to download are free, but I would ask you to consider making a donation to the charity when you download them. It is completely up to you how much you would like to donate - if everyone donates even just a small amount it would all add up! If you are not able to make a donation that's ok, you can still download the colouring pages but if you could share this post with your family and friends that would be fantastic.

Thank you! Stay safe and stay healthy everyone. x
Since so many of us are staying at home at the moment, self-isolating and following the guidelines on social distancing, I thought it would be a good idea to put together a list with ideas for things you can do at home. I've grouped ideas into different categories, so whether you are looking after your children at home, missing going out visiting places or looking for a little distraction in these anxious times there should be something for you to do on the list! I will keep it updated if I spot new ideas and if you have any suggestions please do let me know in the comments.
Stay safe and stay healthy everyone x

Visit a Museum Online

You might not be able to leave your house at the moment but that doesn't mean you can't explore museums or art galleries! Google's Arts and Culture website allows you to explore the collections of hundreds of galleries and musuems from around the world, including:
The Natural History Museum, London
The Rijksmusuem, Amsterdam

Music
- Listen to some of your favourite music.
- Make a playlist for a friend.
- Practise playing an instrument and learn new pieces by searching for sheet music online.

Enjoy Nature
We are fortunate in the UK that we are heading into spring and the weather (so far!) has been improving. Whilst a lot of life feels like it has been put on pause, nature is still carrying on as normal. Go outside in your garden or if you don't have a garden, what can you see or hear from your window? Listen for the birds singing and see the flowers blossoming and trees becoming greener.

I will be spending as much time as possible in my garden over the coming weeks. I expect a lot of people will have tidier gardens than normal! I plan to sow vegetable and flower seeds, but if you don't have a garden you can still experience the joy of watching a plant grow. Herbs can be grown on a kitchen windowsill. Did you know that there are lots of vegetables that can be regrown too? If you don't have a pot of compost for growing a plant inside you can grow carrot tops, celery and onions in a saucer of water.

Exercise
Get (or keep) fit! Even in a very small amount of space there are still exercises you can do. Sometimes if I'm feeling a bit anxious or stressed I like to remind myself how exercise releases endorphins and will make me feel better.

Joe Wicks has lots of free workout videos on his Youtube channel The Body Coach TV - including a daily PE lesson for children.

Dance - this combines listening to music to make you feel good and some exercise! I've been learning a routine to 'Come Alive' from The Greatest Showman via this video from Beginner Dance Tutorials on Youtube. I'm not very coordinated when it comes to dancing, but this video is easy to follow and fun!

Practise Yoga - Yoga With Adriene has lots of great videos to follow, ranging from short to long sessions and routines to help you relax or burn off a few calories.

Get Creative
Lots of designers are being generous right now and sharing free printables. I have designed some colouring pages, including the butterflies design shown below, which are free for you to download via this page.
Have you seen rainbows popping up in the windows of your neighbourhood? I spotted lots on my one trip out to the supermarket. A think the trend started in Italy, but has spread around the world. It's a lovely thing to do to spread a little hope and raise a smile for your neighbours. People are sharing their rainbows online with #letsallbewell.

Start (or finish) a craft project. Did you start knitting a jumper or sewing a dress ages ago but never finished it? Now's the perfect time to do it! I've been looking through my stack of sewing patterns trying to decide what to make next. I've also been meaning to sew some oven gloves for ages but keep getting scared by the wadding which I've never used before, so maybe I'll do those first!

There are plenty of craft tutorials online too. You can see all the ones from my blog here.

Affinity is currently offering a 90 day free trial of their suite of software; Publisher, Photo and Designer and a 50% discount if you want to buy and keep them. I love their software - it's what I use for creating my designs!

Read a book

We are lucky to have lots of books in our house, so it would take a very long time for us to run out of things to read! However, if you don't have many books at home there are lots of eBooks you can access online for free.
Oxford Owl have books for 3-11 year olds
Local libraries may be shut for now, but if you look up your library's website you can borrow e-books, audio books and e-magazines.

Other Ideas:
- Play a board game with a friend via a video call. You might not be able to meet face to face but you can still play a game together! Some games, like cards probably won't work but plenty of board games could be played from a distance for example battleships, chess, draughts, monopoly or snakes and ladders.
- Do a quiz with a friend online.
- If you are really desperate and have done everything else you could always clean your house and do some of those house jobs you never normally have time for!!

It's been a long time since I last wrote a blog post - I had to remind myself how I actually write one and the html code I need use! The spread of the corona virus has turned the world upside down and life for so many of us has dramatically changed over the last few weeks. It's a strange and scary time, but more important than ever to look out for one another as well as looking after ourselves. I wanted to find ways that I can try to do something more to help. If you are staying at home for the foreseeable future, home schooling children or just want something to take your mind off the news for a while, art and creativity can be really helpful.
I have designed a free printable colouring page for you to download and colour and am planning some other ideas which I will share with you soon. You can also check out all my past craft project posts here. This butterflies and flowers colouring page design has lots of details, so should keep you or your children occupied for a while!

I would love to see your coloured pages - leave a comment below, or if you share your pictures on Instagram or Facebook tag me @hazelfishercreations or use #myhfcmakes
Last summer my sister and I visited Blue Owl, a pottery painting studio, cafe and gift shop, in Great Horkesley, (just outside Colchester) Essex. We really enjoyed our visit and would definitely recommend taking a trip there yourself if you are in the area!
The building itself is a converted country pub - a beautiful old building, full of character (including wood beams). Everyone at Blue Owl is very friendly and the place has a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed sampling the cakes on offer and browsing the gifts before choosing some pottery to paint. There is a very wide range of pottery items to choose from: coasters, mugs, plates, figurines, tea pots, vases and much more! With so much choice it was hard to pick what to paint, but after a lot of pondering we each decided to paint a plate.

My friend, the talented illustrator Helen Smith, works in the kiln room and is Blue Owl's resident artist so she was able to give us a tour of the kiln room and show us how the pottery painting process works which was very interesting! I had never done pottery painting before, only having worked a little with ceramics back at school and in art college, so I really enjoyed learning something new.

There is plenty of space for painting in the Blue Owl (booking is required) or you can borrow a take away kit (for a week) to paint at home. We chose the take away kit option which meant we could take our time to work on our plates (I think mine took around 10 hours to paint altogether - so it's a good job I was doing it at home or I would have been spending the night at the Blue Owl too!). There is no rental charge for the kit, just a returnable deposit of £20 and the cost of the pottery items you paint (which are very reasonable too - our plates cost £10 each).
The kit contains a good selection of paint colours (24), writer bottle (for drawing fine lines), paint palette, brushes, sponge, instructions and colour reference tile - which is invaluable as the colours look very different before and after firing/ glazing.

Before starting to paint my plate I sketched out a full-scale version of my design on paper, which I then transferred onto the plate. I'm would usually sketch designs in pencil, however, pencils will mark the plate and still be visible after glazing. Instead felt tip pens were recommended to us by the people at Blue Owl. Any felt tip pen is fine and will burn off in the kiln. It felt very odd to sketch in pen though, even knowing it would disappear again later! I found that tracing over my paper design with felt tip pen on grease-proof paper worked well in transferring the design to the plate.

Next was time for the painting! The ceramic paints dried very pale, so the colour reference tile was very useful here to imagine how the colours would look. I used the writer bottle to outline my rabbits and central flower. It was easier than I thought it would be to use the writer bottle - not too dissimilar to using a fine liner pen. Any tiny blobs of paint that were unwanted were easy to scrape off with a pin.

For the back I wanted to try and achieve a graduated colour with layers of blue / green.

We took our painted plates back to Blue Owl to be glazed and fired. This process takes a few days - to allow drying of the glaze and cooling after firing (which has to happen gradually so the plates don't crack).
When we picked up out plates this is what they looked like. We were both very pleased with the results!
The pink flowers were paler than I would have liked but otherwise the colours came out how I hoped they would.
The colours and paint texture turned out great on the back too. I would love to paint a whole dinner set like this!
I thought that it would be fun to start up sharing my colour palettes again and to try out the palettes with my own designs. This palette was inspired by my photo of sea holly, which not only has interesting colours but striking textures and shapes too. I enjoyed taking lots of photos of plants in the garden centre during last summer so be prepared for more plant inspired palettes coming soon!
I began Inktober with the best of intentions to draw everyday, however, as it often does things got busy and I've fallen behind. I will still complete my list of 31 prompts, it will just end up being 'Inkvember' instead of 'Inktober'!!!
Here's a round-up of my drawings for days 1-10...

Each drawing is within a 2.5 x 2.5 inch square in my sketchbook (the idea being that by keeping them small makes them more manageable). I start with a pencil sketch then ink in pigment fineliner pens (Steadtler and UniPin) ranging from very fine 0.05 to the thicker 0.8 size.

Day 7' s Owl (one of my favourites so far) also has a watercolour wash...
Creating a cut and sew fat quarter design was the challenge for this week's Spoonflower contest. I have been wanting to design more cut and sew projects for a while, so the contest was a perfect prompt for me to work on this!

I decided to create a rabbit doll pattern and quickly came up with lots of ideas for using different patterns on the doll - the hardest part was choosing which theme I wanted to enter into the contest! Below are some of my ideas - primroses, tortoises, space, donuts and penguins...

I posted my ideas on Facebook and Instagram to see which ones were the most popular. It was a close competition but the donuts version came out on top, so that is the one I entered into the contest. Below is my finished fat quarter design which includes all the pieces to make the rabbit, with instructions printed on the fabric.
I can't wait to see how this looks printed on fabric and I will be finishing off the other versions so you will be able to buy a selection of different rabbit cut and sew dolls from my shop soon!
Although I have not tested the final donut design yet I have stitched up a sample using the basic patterns pieces for the rabbit on fabric I already had...
Making a sample was a really important step as it meant I could check all the pieces worked together and make adjustments to the pattern for anything that wasn't quite working before finalising the fat quarter design. The ears are my favourite part of this - I love the effect of using two fabrics and turning the edges in. The face was embroidered on this version, instead of printed. She needs some clothes too, so I will also be working on some designs for those soon!
This is part 5 of a series on learning the basics of using printables and how to get more out of them. In this post I will be focusing on how you can print and resize digital scrapbooking papers.

The scrapbooking papers in my shop are all sized 12 x 12 inches. This means they are great for using in 12 inch albums - to print them 12 x 12 inch size:
- You can take the files to your local professional printers to be printed 12 x 12 inch size
- They can be printed on A3+ size printers (check your model will take 12 inch wide paper)
However, if you don’t have access to a large format printer you can still use these files with your A4 / Letter size home printer.

Printing Full Size
If you print using the ‘Image Print Size’ / ‘Full Size’ / ‘Actual Size’ option the paper design will print to its original scale, filling your A4 / Letter size paper. Note that part of the design will not be printed as it extends beyond the size of your paper.

Resizing 12x12 inch Papers
You can also print the sheet so that it fits the whole design on your paper – select ‘Fit Page’ from your printer options page. If you are printing on Letter or A4 size paper this will mean a 12 x 12 inch size design will be shrunk to approximately 8 x 8 inches when printed – ideal if you have an 8 inch album!

If you have photo editing software the size of the printed sheet can be controlled more accurately. From the menu, open Image Size (or Document Size, depending on which software you have) you can then change the Print Size to your desired number of inches. (The image below shows a screen shot of me doing this in PhotoPlus.)

Tip: It is better to reduce the size of a printable rather than enlarging it because enlarging can reduce the quality of the print. The larger you make the design the more the quality will deteriorate, so if you only enlarge it a little the quality difference may not be too noticeable – try a test print and see what happens!
This week's Spoonflower design challenge has a limited colour palette theme - the brief allowed us to create a design on any theme we liked so long as we used at least 3 of the colours specified by Spoonflower (black or white accents were also allowed).
I decided to create a floral and butterfly themed design...

As you can see, I used the Lagoon, Saffron, Terracotta and Blush shades in my design with white, but did not use the Ocean green colour. I do quite like the colours provided, although it is usually tricky to make designs in the limited colour palette challenges - I'm always wishing to be able to use other tones within one hue to get a better variety of darks and lights within a design. However, I am happy with how the colours worked in my design.

Another reason why I enjoyed the challenge of creating this design was because I am learning to use Affinity Designer software, which is still fairly new to me. The elements in this design are all vectors, which I made by tracing over my hand drawings. I like how vector artwork can easily be resized and recoloured - the 'Symbols' tool in Affinity Designer makes this even quicker and easier too. As I become more confident in using the software I'm hoping that it should help me to grow my portfolio of designs faster. I have been experimenting with other colour palettes for this design (like the one below) and plan to use the different elements from the design in new coordinating patterns too.
Continuing my Printables Basics series, sharing advice and tutorials on using printables; in this post I will be sharing a few tips on printing.

Your printable designs can be printed at home or if you don't have your own printer you can take files to a professional printers. Having designs professionally printed is also ideal if your printer can’t handle the type of print you would like to make, such as large poster prints or printing on very thick card.
Home printers can produce very good results and are very affordable option – you don’t need a top of the range model for great prints! I have used an HP PSC2355 and Epson Stylus SX425W, both producing excellent prints. As general advice for best results from any printer, I recommend using your printer’s highest quality setting and a good quality paper or card. Printing at home also allows you more freedom for experimentation - you can try using different papers to see what you like best from your own printer.

Paper Types
You can print on ordinary copy paper, however, this is quite thin (usually about 80gsm) and I think that something a little heavier looks and feels much nicer. For scrapbooking papers I use 120gsm paper. If you are planning to print for use in scrapbooks, which you want to keep for a long time, remember to check that your paper is acid and lignin free.
For items like gift boxes, bunting, cupcake toppers or cards you will want to use a thicker paper or card which is sturdier and will keep its shape better; I use 240gsm card. You will need to check what thickness of card your printer will handle – some will struggle to take thicker card, depending on how paper / card is fed into your printer.

Ink Type
For home printers you have a choice of laser and inkjet. Personally, I have only used inkjet, however laser printers do have some benefits. Laser printers are generally faster and better if you are printing high volumes (particularly text based documents). Another benefit of laser printers over inkjet is that they print with toner which can be used with heat foiling (inkjet inks will not work for this). This technique has become very popular, producing stunning results and is something I would love to try with my designs!
Inkjet printers are generally better for printing the colours of images and photos. The type of ink inkjet printers can vary too – some use dye based ink and some is pigment based. This is something you will want to be aware of particularly if you intend to use wet mediums on your print outs (such as colouring digital stamps with watercolours or using glitter glue). Pigment inks should be ok with this, however, dye based inks are water based and can bleed with wet. You can read more details about this in my Dye vs. Pigment Ink post.

Crop Marks and Bleed
If you have downloaded something like one of my colour in card designs (subscribe to my newsletter to try one for free!) you might wonder what the little black lines in the corners are for. These are crop marks – simply guide lines used by designers/ printers to show where a design should be trimmed. The card in the picture below is on a sheet measuring 8.5 x 11 inches and if you trim using the crop marks as guides you should end up with a card A6 in size.
Designs like this, with crop marks, also have ‘bleed’ (highlighted in blue in the image). This is where the edge of the design extends beyond the trimmed size of the finished print. It means you won’t get a white line appearing around the edge of the trimmed print – particularly important if the colour / design goes to the edge of the print which is more noticeable on some of my invitation designs.
This post is part of my Printables Basics series, where I share tips, advice and tutorials on how to get started with using printables.
In this post I will be covering the file types which I use for my printables and some of the software you can use with them.

You will find most printables are available in one of these file types: PDF, JPG or PNG. Most of my printable designs are in JPG format, as they are image based. I use PNG for digital stamps as this format allows for a transparent background. PDF is more suitable for documents with multiple pages – like calendars / planners.
I won't go into the finer details of the file types here (although if you want more info you can find it here for PDF, JPG and PNG), but will focus on what programs you can use to open them.

PDF
PDF files can be opened with Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you probably already have on your computer but if you don't you can download it for free here.

JPG and PNG
JPG and PNG files can be opened by most imaging software. For most of my designs a really basic photo viewing software (like Windows Photo Viewer) is all you need to open, view and print the sheets.

FAQ – I can’t print the files, there’s no option to print when I open the file in Windows Photo Viewer / ‘Print’ is greyed out
This usually happens if you are opeing the files directly from the .zip folder. Try copying and pasting the JPG files to another folder in your documents, then printing from these. This should solve the problem but if it doesn’t please contact me and I will do my best to help you.

For some designs, like my digital stamps, you may want to resize the images before printing. You can do this in word processing or image editing software. Image editing software will give you far more options and control with creating and editing images - as well as resizing you can colour, layer images and lots more. I use Serif PhotoPlus and Affinity Photo (a newer software also by Serif) both of these are similar to Photoshop but much more affordable! Other alternatives include Adobe Photoshop Elements, GIMP or PicMonkey.

If you simply want to resize and print then you can use word processing software like Microsoft Word.
To open an image in Microsoft Word:
First, create a new document.
Then from the menu select: Insert > Picture and choose the name of the file you want to open. The picture will then be pasted onto your document, where you can resize and print it.
October means that it is time for the annual drawing challenge of Inktober again! Thousands of artists take part each year, making 1 ink drawing a day for the month of October, to practice their drawing skills.
You can find out more about the challenge, including rules and the official prompt list, over on the Inktober website.

I decided that this year I would set myself my own Animals theme and came up with a list of 31 different animals to draw throughout the month. Some are ones I have drawn before and some will be completely new for me - I'm looking forward to drawing them all! In part 1 of my Printables Basics series I shared a brief introduction to printables and some of the reasons why I love them. If you’re new to printables and ready to give them a go the first thing you need to know is how to download them…
There are two ways you can receive printables from my Etsy shop; Instant Download or by email. Instant Download is for non-customised designs like scrapbooking papers, digital stamps, collage sheets, some party sets etc. Anything that is customised, or has options like a choice of colours, will be sent to you by email - for example invitations, customised cupcake toppers etc.
If the files are available as Instant Download, the listing will look like this, with the Instant download symbol in the top left corner:

Instant Downloads
Instant Downloads are fantastic when you need to be able to print a design in a hurry… Forgotten to get a card for your child’s teacher, need it for tomorrow and it’s now 10pm? No problem! Head to Etsy, buy an Instant Download card and print it within minutes! You don’t need to wait for the seller to send the file – my customers can be in a different time zone to me, have purchased, downloaded and printed files while it is the middle of the night for me and I am fast asleep.

Files available as Instant Download will be ready to download as soon as your payment has been confirmed (this can take a few minutes). You will receive an email from Etsy with a download link, or you can access the downloads via the 'Purchases and Reviews' section of your account.

Simply click on 'Download Files', which will take you to the Downloads page for your order. Here you will find a list of files and a note from me with some guidance on downloading and using the files and my terms of use.

Click on the 'Download' button next to each file to download and save onto your computer. This will download the file to the 'Downloads' folder on your computer - I suggest you move this somewhere easy to find for future use - set up a folder in your documents where you can keep all your printables nicely organised!

(If you're having trouble downloading your files from Etsy, you may also find this useful - Etsy's guide on downloading digital items.)

Extracting files from a ZIP folder
Some of my Instant Download items have several files (eg: sets of scrapbooking papers), so these are compressed into .zip folders. You may find the files will automatically be extracted when you click 'Download', if not it is easy to do:

Once the .zip folder is downloaded onto your computer you can extract the files on:

A PC by right-clicking the compressed folder and click Extract All. Specify where you would like to store the extracted files.

A MAC by double clicking the folder and it will be decompressed into the same folder the .zip folder is located.

Emailed Printables
For items not available as Instant Download, I will usually send you an email with the files included as attachments. By clicking on the attachment in your email you should easily be able to download and save the file for printing.

For larger files, or something like a party set with lots of files, instead of receiving the files as attachments you will be sent a link to access the files through. Simply click on the link to open the album and view your files - you should see something like this:

Here you can select files you would like to download, then click the ‘Download’ button at the top of the page to download and save them to your computer. You don’t need a OneDrive / Microsoft account to do this – if you see a message asking you to sign in just ignore this and continue with downloading the files.

If you’re a printable newbie you might be asking...
What are printables?
Printables are digital files (usually jpg, pdf or png format) which you download and print either yourself, or take to your local professional printers for printing.
There are many free printables available online (I have some too!) or you can purchase from places like Etsy (where I sell my designs).

What makes printables so great?
6 reasons to love them…

They take up less space. Any crafter will know that their crafty stash can easily get out of control! Printables take up much less space than stacks of paper and rubber stamps and you can still have a really wide variety of designs on hand for your next project.

With Instant Downloads you can have access to the designs straight away – no need to wait for the mail to arrive with your order!

You have control over the type of paper or card you print on – love a design and want it printed on textured card? Easy! You can experiment with printing on coloured paper, different weights, textures and more!

Printables cost less – you have no postage to pay and it can be a lot cheaper printing exactly what you need yourself for craft papers or for invitations and parties.

Print how many you want and when you want. If you buy a pack of papers but like some patterns more than others you only need to print the ones you like, which is great for the environment especially if you print on recycled paper!

Printables are incredibly versatile – you can resize, change colours and use in so many creative ways!

As a designer I love creating printables; being able to draw a variety of subjects and applying my designs to different products without the need to carry large quantities of physical stock. I enjoy designing for a range of printable types from scrapbooking papers, collage sheets and digital stamps to invitations, wedding stationery, party decorations and colour in greeting cards. You can find all of my current designs in my Etsy shop hfcSupplies, or sign up to my newsletter to hear about new designs and receive exclusive offers and access to free printables!
With such a fun theme I couldn't miss out on designing for Spoonflower's Gingerbread contest! This colourful design is created from my pen, watercolour, coloured pencil and felt tip pen illustrations of gingerbread houses, gingerbread men, Christmas trees, candy canes and lollipops. This was a really fun design to make and I loved working with these colours!
I took part in Inktober again this year - a month long drawing challenge where thousands of artists (both amateur and professional) from around the world make a drawing in ink every day of October and post their pictures online. Last year I joined in but didn't quite manage to do a drawing every day, so this year my aim was to just do something, even if it was small, every day - and I did it!
I kept my drawings small this year, so it was more realistic to be able to finish them. Mostly I was drawing in the evening and I have to admit there were a few nights when I was feeling tired and not particularly wanting to pick up my sketchbook, but I didn't want to miss a day.
I think it's a great challenge to take part in and I'm sure my drawing has benefited, it's also nice to draw just for fun on a variety of subjects. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook you will have already seen my drawings, but I wanted to share just a few of my favourites here too. Which ones are your favourites?

This week's Spoonflower contest is being held in conjunction with Lake, a colouring app, and we could create a design on any subject we liked, so long as it was in black and white. Such open ended contests like this can be the hardest - how do you choose what theme to draw!? They also produce an amazing, diverse mix of entries, it's wonderful to see how creative everyone else has been!

I took inspiration for my design from my Inktober drawings (which you will have seen I have been sharing if you follow me on Instagram or Facebook and I will be posting some on here soon too) and used the dancing girl as the start of my design. I was also inspired by Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts designs; I love the flowing lines of Art Nouveau and the plant inspired wallpaper designs by William Morris.

My design is all hand drawn in pen, and is a repeating pattern so it took a little back and forth between the scanner and adding in a few more details by hand to get the flowing lines to all line up and work in repeat. I enjoyed making this one and hope you like it too!

It's time for Spoonflower's annual tea towel calendar contest again! It's hard to believe how quickly this time of year comes around and this is the 4th year I have taken part in the contest! I sketched a few ideas out for the calendar and chose to work up this feathers and flowers design for my entry. My feathers and arrows fabric design has been popular on Spoonflower, so I thought I would like to add some new feathers designs - starting with this calendar!
I drew the design in pen on watercolour paper then coloured it with layers of watercolour pencils, watercolour paints and coloured pencils. Next I scanned the paintings, arranged all the pieces digitally to create the finished calendar.
I'm happy with how this design turned out, especially as half way through I didn't like how it was looking. The most frustrating part of drawing or designing is when the initial enthusiasm wears off and it doesn't look how you want it to, but can't quite put your finger on what to do to fix it. The texture of the watercolour paper was showing through too much when I first scanned the artwork on this, but I went back to the original, added more more watercolour paint and it looked much better when I scanned it again.
